“Who was genuinely (and I mean genuinely) surprised to find that horsemeat had been illegally profiteered into the food chain? Nobody. What was puzzling was the extent to which meat dealers felt compelled to shoot themselves in the hindquarters by passing their product off as something else.

Notwithstanding the absence of demand among a Great British buying public currently squeamish at the thought of tucking in to a plate of Shergar, make no mistake that horse is leaner and apparently cheaper than beef and lower in cholesterol. This stuff should be easy to sell, and that’s why there’s hope yet for the legal horsemeat traders. It’s what a lot of IT channel folk might call ‘disruptive’, and like the resellers who trade in disruptive IT solutions, if those horse dealers had their opportunity again, they’d take a more strategic view of their market opportunity rather than a tactical one.

Consider for a moment what they’d need in order to make their business a success. Firstly, a great partnership with a quality supplier. Secondly, a straightforward and honest approach about what they are selling. Thirdly, some diligent and workmanlike marketing. To succeed with disruptive solutions in the IT environment, the same recipe has got to be deployed. It’s got to be simple, the benefits have got to be clear, and it’s got to be right for today’s market context.

The recent food scandal also reinforces the old adage that you really, really don’t want to know how they make sausages and burgers…”
